Junior Hockey Introduction
Hockey is a sport enjoyed by a wide group of people: men and women, young and old, playing in the city and country. Hockey is a true sport for all because it caters for and encourages participation by all members of society. As one of the few sports that can be played throughout the lifespan, hockey boasts players as young as five through to veterans over 80 years of age.
Hockey has facilitated increased participation of juniors through highly successful "modified game" initiatives like Rookey. Rookey is a new concept using a large ball and modified sticks to allow an easy introduction to those new to the game.
Through Hockey WA, Harlies run a Schools program to introduce children to the sport. This gets kids excited about the game and they can join a club to play Minkey. Minkey Hockey is played in the first few years and is a modified game to allow children to gain skills to play hockey on a full field. The young children graduate within this program to a nine-a-side mixed game.
Once children reach year 5, they move to the full field game. A competition structure exists that allows for individual development from beginner to elite level. Juniors usually grow up learning the game on grass hockey fields, however as synthetic surfaces become more and more prevalent, their use becomes more common among lower and younger grades.
